NEHRUJI
Vengrai Parthasarathy
Nehruji was described not just as a man but as a procession of men––patriot,
freedom fighter literary figure, statesman and a great humanist.
One more quality needs to be added to this formidable list. His capacity
to forgive and forget..
Though, during his turbulent career, he had spent over nine years of his
life in British prisons. Panditji’s decision after India won freedom to remain within
the Commonwealth was an exemplary decision of forgive and forget. in the
interest of the country and even accept the queen of England as the formal Head.
This decision was reported to have taken even
Sir Winston Churchill pleasantly surprised.
Nehruji’s books “Glimpses of World History”and “Discovery of India” are
classics of their genre. He headed the non-alignment group with Nasser and Tito and
authored the Panchsheel doctrine. The Chinese volte face in 1962 was a great
disappointment to him and perhaps hastened his tryst with destiny.
