Sharmila’s Vengeance
by vengrai parthsarthy
It is a pastime of mine, wheneverI read a story, to try mentally to
give a different ending. This is what I tried to do after reading VENGEANCE by K.Parthasarathy.
Here’s the scenario in case you do not recall the sequence of events.
Vinod and Sharmila were an unhappy couple. He was a sadistic cruel husband; she a suffering wife. She was at the end of the tether and after falling seriously ill she has her vengeance by giving Vinod a shock ;their son is not his and breathes her last.

How would I end this story to save the only child from the father’s cruelty?
The story has to be dated to the eighties and nineties because nowdays DNA testing has made paternity identity easy. This is how I would end the tale:

“Sharmila was in great distress She was aching all over when
Vinod walked in with their TWO children. Sharmila would not even look at him. He seemed not affected or even concerned about her state. The doctor had
said that she may not last much longer. It was then that Vinod with a grin on his face told Sharmila that she can die in peace.”I have done my bit to hasten it with a
drop of cyanide in your medicine” And he grinned like a Cheshire cat. Sharmila winced.

She then told him “I have a secret which I should tell you about. One of my two children is not yours”. “Which one”? Vinod first asked and then almost shouted. There was no reply. She was gone leaving him in a
a froth of despair…Which one? Which one?
